J’ai totalement foiré la publication de cet article, la semaine dernière… J’avais pourtant prévu une édition, mais je me suis retrouvée dans un lieu où les connexions Wifi se dealent au prix fort, vu l’absence notoire que j’ai pu constater dans l’ensemble de la ville… les seuls lieux ouverts avec bonne connexion sont ces fameuses chaînes de fast foods américains (et son équivalent et concurrent européen)….
Franchement tu n’aurais pas voulu un agenda puant la mauvaise frite et le hamburger… Enfin perso, j’avais pas trop envie de passer deux heures dans ce bain d’huile et de mayonnaise.
Mais me voilà de retour, et j’ai quelques propositions à te faire… je ne garantis pas qu’elles sont toutes bio, vegan et bonnes pour la santé. Mais au moins, l’air que je respire – au moment où je t’écris ces quelques lignes – m’est agréable !
Et dans l’agenda, tu verras que ici et là je parle de plusieurs street artists qui nous présentent leur travail ailleurs qu’en rue… !
MUSIC & CONCERTS
Il se passe à nouveau quelque chose à la Tricoterie, à Saint-Gilles : The Beat Therapy s’y déroulera tous les jeudis à commencer par cette semaine avec le groupe Brussels Swing Boulevard qui nous propose des covers de classiques du jazz. Durant la soirée, il y aura également un live painting de l’artiste Spear…
Je ne sais pas si c’est moi qui n’ai jamais fait attention ou si le lieu est nouveau : place du Samedi, il y a le Petrus. Faut dire que bien que situé au centre de la ville, entre De Brouckere, rue de Laeken et la place Sainte-Catherine, ce n’est pas vraiment un endroit où il est agréable de passer : la rue de Laeken n’est pas la plus glamour (malgré ses très bonnes adresses) et il y a quelques buildings qui ont la fâcheuse tendance d’écraser visuellement le piéton…
Mais que cela n’empêche pas d’aller découvrir Le Petrus et leur Live session le jeudi : invitation d’un artiste à jouer. Ce soir, c’est l’artiste Shishani que tu pourras découvrir : un registre plutôt soul, une belle voix qu’elle accompagne à la guitare et des paroles qui font sens… Cela donne envie d’aller l’applaudir…
Samedi soir, du côté de Saint-Gilles, il y a la soirée Resonare, 9ème édition déjà… Bon, sans doute est-ce parce que je suis fort occupée mais je ne suis pas parvenue à trouver le programme. Je sais que Quattrophage y jouera mais aucune idée des autres groupes… C’est à découvrir dans un lieu que je ne connaissais absolument pas : ”L’Espace Etincelle” sur la rue de la Victoire.
En début de semaine, on a tendance à penser qu’il n’y a rien à faire…. pourtant pas mal de concepts se déroulent ces jours-là. C’est sûr que c’est plus calme, que le public est soit fatigué d’un long week-end, soit économise son énergie pour celui à venir… Mardi, pourquoi ne pas tester les Black Out Session de l’Atelier 210 ?
Tu y vas, tu éteins ton portable, tu t’installes confortablement… On éteint les lumières et on te passe l’entièreté de l’album d’un artiste. Cette semaine c’est ”A Love Supreme” de John Coltrane… J’adhère suprêmement….
FESTIVAL
Je suis sûre que tu as pu trouver tout(e) seul(e) ton chemin vers le Festival des Libertés, qui, comme tous les mois d’octobre se tient au Théâtre National et offre une programmation dont mes potes activistes tendance gauche raffolent !
Au programme des expositions, beaucoup de films documentaires sur des tas de sujets autour de l’état du monde, de la citoyenneté et de la lutte pour la liberté. Bien sûr, le côté festif n’est pas oublié, avec des concerts tous les soirs !
Pour les quelques jours qui restent, un documentaire qui me semble intéressant nous parle de toutes ces luttes – pacifistes – à travers le monde afin de vivre dans un monde meilleur. Il me semble, au vu du pitch, que c’est porteur d’espoir….
Everyday Rebellion // Vrijheids Festival des Libertés 2014
Depuis cinq ans, les organisateurs de Hexagen nous proposent des concerts de rock indépendant dans divers lieux de la ville. Pour marquer le coup, ils montent, cette fois-ci, un festival durant deux jours et invitent un millier de groupes qui sur deux jours entre le Beursschouwburg et le Magasin 4.
Week-end de folie organisationnelle qui s’annonce donc pour eux… Et pour toi, si tu aimes le genre, un programme complet qui fera chanter tes oreilles et te donnera la banane pour affronter tout l’hiver !
ART
Cette semaine, du côté de la scène artsy, ça commence vendredi, avec le vernissage de l’exposition ”Séquences” par le collectif VAO. Au programme quelques bons artistes, qui depuis la création du collectif ont bien évolué.. Passant du street art pur et dur à d’autres réflexions artistiques.
Mon attention a été attirée par la présence de l’Atlas, street artist français, qui fait également partie du l’exposition qui se déroule en ce moment chez sa galeriste, Martine Ehmer, qui est d’ailleurs partenaire de l’exposition dont je parle ici.
Il y a d’autres noms sur l’affiche, bien sûr, comme ceux de Obêtre – très présent dans l’agenda en ce moment, entre sa récente exposition solo au Jacques Francq et ses diverses visites guidées street art ; Meta Parole – qui est donc revenu de son séjour d’un an en Amérique latine – et Clyde Knowland… Trois artistes basés à Bruxelles et qui partageaient, jusqu’il y a peu le même atelier dans les locaux d’une ancienne librairie chrétienne qui deviendra bientôt un complexe immobilier plus rentable, paraît-il qu’un atelier d’artistes…
Ici, le vernissage a lieu dans le cadre de l’ouverture de la Vallée, nouveau lieu ouvert avec la collaboration de la Smart, et où ils étaient en résidence.
Cet évènement n’est pas tout à fait alternatif, j’avoue, mais je ne peux pas ne pas en parler vu qu’un de mes potes y participent. Exhi-B est un évènement qui surfe entre la tendance ”street art” et graphisme et la soirée avec DJ avec touche artsy. Cela reste sympa et vu le succès offre en tout cas une belle visibilité à de nombreux artistes !
En plus de Arnaud End, je vois sur l’affiche la présence de Denis Meyers ou encore Kool Koor : tous issus de la culture street art et également travaillant leur art à d’autres niveaux aujourd’hui !
Et tiens, pour te montrer à quel point je suis dédiée à cet agenda, j’ai chopé Arnaud dans son atelier il y a quelques jours et je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher de prendre une photo au milieu de ses oeuvres qui voyagent entre deux ventes et expos ! (Et puis, c’est aussi parce que cela faisait un long texte sans images et que je prends au moins 1500 photos par jour, alors faut que cela serve à quelque chose, non ?)
Mais revenons à notre culture alternative ! J’en ai déjà touché un mot le mois passé : L’Iselp lance ses promenades guidées afin d’aller voir de plus près ces lieux dont je parle moi-même très souvent ! L’évènement s’intitule ”Let’s Wak” et t’emmèneras cette semaine à la découverte de Hekla, Rectangle et De La Charge qui se trouvent tous les trois à quelques blocs l’un de l’autre dans le bas de Saint-Gilles.
Je vais arrêter ici pour la scène artsy, tu peux voir que je t’ai mis des liens vers Hectoliter et son exposition de posters psychédéliques.
Il y a aussi les derniers jours de l’exposition ”Portraits of a city” à l’Argos Art Center et perso, je dois absolument prendre rendez-vous chez apes&castle, un tout nouveau project space qui a ouvert le week-end passé, afin de découvrir cette nouvelle initiative et les artistes de leur première exposition !
Et bien sûr, je passerai à Elzenhof, pour y voir l’exposition du collectif de Yarn Bombing ixellois qui y a installé de nombreuses de leurs oeuvres tricotées que l’on peut voir généralement dans l’espace public !
PARTIES
Du côté de la nuit, il y a toujours de quoi faire… Bien sûr le Bar du Matin reste une valeur sûre, pour commencer la soirée ou pour écouter du bon son et même danser, sans sacrifier toute la nuit à l’activité… surtout quand le lendemain on doit bosser ! Cette semaine le collectif Supafly prend le lieu d’assaut pour proposer leur musique un peu old school, beaucoup festive, sans prise de tête.
Si tu cherches un lieu et une musique plus underground, je pense que le Black Buddah devrait faire l’affaire pour toi cette semaine… La soirée Intentional Resonane y a lieu ce week-end avec quelques DJ’s dont j’ai un peu écouté les morceaux. Le style me plaît, mais je te laisse découvrir toi-même de quoi il s’agit.
Je déteste commencer à donner des étiquettes à des genres musicaux, qui compte x milliers de sous étiquettes de toute façon, et qui donne la certitude de se gourer d’un millimètre.. Et de passer pour un con..
Sinon à part ça, un truc qui me plaît, c’est de lire les détails pratiques de la soirée : cela donne une mine d’informations sur le public qu’on attend… Si t’as une info sur le nombre de places du parking à proximité ou si on te dit que si tu viens à vélo c’est gratuit, tu sens tout de suite les différences de style… Cette soirée-ci prend la peine de prévenir que les chiens ne sont pas admis… Tout un poème..
Je pense que c’est la première fois que mon radar tombe sur un truc à l’O’Reilly’s, l’Irish Pub en face de la Bourse… Et là c’est une soirée Drum Room Resident Night ? Un peu saugrenu le mélange entre le lieu et le genre… Mais pourquoi pas ?
PERFORMANCES
Le genre d’évènement dont je n’ai aucune idée de qui est derrière, où cela se passe et ce qu’ils proposent. Un truc étrange, qui porte donc bien son nom… Être-ange.. et je crois que c’est une performance, mais je ne suis pas du tout certaine ! Obscur objet culturel dans l’agenda bruxellois…
A part ça, un programme un peu plus clair, c’est celui du Théâtre de la Balsamine, qui propose en ce moment le festival Nos petites Madeleines. Pour la soirée de clôture il y aura – entre autres – une performance de Bonom, Human Brush !
CINEMA
Au cinéma cette semaine, je t’invite à aller découvrir le film Vandal à l’Aventure… mais note bien la date, car en réalité c’est une séance de ciné-club proposé par Smala-Cinéma (de feu l’Arenberg) et il s’agit donc d’une séance unique…
Vacances de Toussaint, les kids ont plein de temps libre qu’ils pourront occuper par exemple en se rendant au Filemon : un festival de films pour enfants ! Le programme est très chargé et se déroule dans plusieurs endroits en ville : Cinematek, Pianofabriek, Espace Delvaux, Cinéma Nova et bien d’autres (que je cite dans le version en Anglais) !
COMMUNITY
Et pour terminer, c’est comme la messe : communions ensemble pour se rappeler qu’on n’est pas seuls au monde ! Une communauté de citoyens ça peut faire plein de choses : un marché gratuit, ce week-end ci c’est celui du centre-ville, où tu regardes, tu choisis et tu te sers sans rien payer. Ou bien tu viens tu déposes tes objets à donner et tu laisses les gens se servir, sans rien réclamer…
Une communauté, c’est également celle qui ouvre des squats, des occupations d’immeubles pour des gens qui ne peuvent louer un appart… La Communa ouvre ses portes ce week-end pour montrer leur nouveau lieu, après avoir du quitter l’immeuble de bureaux près du Campus de la Plaine, qui a été le cadre de mémorables soirées !
Il y a aussi ceux qui partagent leur amour pour leur quartier et les petites histoires et anecdotes qui lui donnent sa particularité et sa couleur unique… C’est le cas des Greeters qui organisent l’évènement Ixelles se raconte… des visites guidées d’un autre genre…
Et puis il y a toujours une bonne communauté d’amateurs de bières. La bière, même la simple pils c’est sérieux. Le Pantin l’a bien compris… lui qui a décidé de changer sa pils Jupiler habituelle par une autre… choisie par les clients. Et comment choisir si on ne goûte pas ? Impossible.
Donc, pour deux euros, tu pourras tester pas moins de 6 galopins (verre d’une dizaine de cl) de pils…
Et si tu veux rendre ce que tu reçois, tu voudras peut-être rejoindre la communauté The Hive: un agenda collectif où chacun envoie ses tips, infos et idées de sorties dans Bruxelles ! Et en plus, on se voit mercredi prochain pour un verre ! Joins-toi à nous…

ENGLISH
I’m back after a week without this agenda… What did you miss last week because of my lack of publishing my ideas? Well, I’ll make sure to let you know as some of the things I’ve thought talking to you about are still available…
I had a week full of discoveries myself in another city with no decent Wifi connexion. Yes, I was in Belgium.
Believe me or not it’s possible to spend a whole week in this country without stumbling upon a nice café which serves you latte, carrot cake and where everyone is sitting with his laptop… That was weird. But in a way refreshing… But here I am back in town and writing you this agenda, in the hope that you’ll enjoy as much as I do what Brussels has to offer!
In the various events, you’ll see that here and there I speak about few street artists who are offering us to discover their work indoor…
MUSIC & CONCERTS
La Tricoterie is a cultural, citizen space in Saint-Gilles. They have a space that can be used for community projects : there’s conferences, brunchs, concerts… And starting this week: The Beat Therapy every Thursday. The first band is Brussels Swing Boulevard and during the night the artist Spear will be live painting.
For some reason, I haven’t notice the bar/restaurant Le Petrus in Place du Samedi. It’s true the this place is a bit weird : situated at the head of Laekenstraat, at a crossroad that brings you to Sainte-Catherine and the Banks, it seems that it’s nicely situated, but no : there’s this huge building hiding the Boulevard to De Brouckere, Laekenstraat itself is not the best street for a walk and this despite the fact that it’s full of really great spots and addresses… Anyway… Why am I talking about this is to excuse myself for not noticing the very existence of Le Petrus… This time I’ve notice them beceause they are organising Le Petrus Live Session and they invite a soul singer with great text : Shishani.
Saturday night, in Saint-Gilles, there’s the Resonare #9 evening with various concerts. But for some reasons, I couldn’t find the program.. Maybe that’s my limits, as I’m so busy those days, and still trying to write this agenda and even to attend some events even if I have to cancel on last minutes my presence to some of them because I found myself with only one need : going to bed (and not even for sleeping but still working)…
Anyway, I can tell you at least that the band Quattrophage will be playing and it’s all happening at the Espace Etincelle (that I have never heard of, it seems to be a theatre that you can lease), in rue de la Victoire.
That’s a perfect week for a Black Out Session ! Atelier 210 invites you to come and seat in the dark, to fully enjoy the music. The idea is to make you discover an album from first to last song… This week will be ”A Love Supreme” by John Coltrane… You’ll listen to side A, then you’ll have a break and back in the room for the side B… Yes we are ”vinyl talking”…
FESTIVAL
Part of the things I wanted to talk about last week : the Festival des Libertés ! It’s a festival dedicated to citizenship, and fights against whatever is on your way to enjoy your freedom… If you have some lefty activists friends, you may already know about it.
It is held every October in Theatre National and the program consists mainly of documentaries about diverses subjects, always very close to what is happening in the World right now… And of course, there’s a little touch of party with concerts every day! The Festival is held till Saturday, so you still have few days to enjoy their program and get to be aware of whatever needs to be fixed in our planet.
Everyday Rebellion // Vrijheids Festival des Libertés 2014
That’s already five years that the people behind Hexagen organise independent rock events in the city. So they wanted to celebrate their very existence and they are thus offering a whole festival, during two days and invite many bands to enjoy this with them and the public. The festival is taking place during two days in Beursschouwburg and in Magasin 4, the venues gives you already an idea of the quality of their event.. So if that music is your taste, you’ll probably really enjoy your week-end!
ART
Artsy scene is – as usual very full of events, and this despite the fact that I tend to only speaks about event in the alternative art scene, and not the commercial art galleries or museums! If I had to add them all, I should then write an article only about art.. but other do that better than I do!
Among the few proposals that I have for you this week, there’s the exhibition ”Séquences” by VAO Group Show. The collective of street artists have know really evolved in many ways, even if the street art is still in the DNA of their creation. But each individual did manage to continue their work and to move forward in their practice. I’m really looking forward to see the work of L’Atlas, but also Obêtre, Meta Parole and Clyde Knowland among many other talentuous people.
I know that Exhi-B is not to put in the category ”alternative” but it’s difficult to avoid speaking about something when one of your friend is showing his work. The event is now at its 9th edition already and is a success : there’s always a lot of people, to come to see the art works, but also enjoy the party and the food… For some artists, I guess it’s a nice way to draw some attention to a larger public than the small art bubble! Go and check the work of Arnaud End, among many others that I don’t know yet and some who are already quiet famous like Denis Meyers or Kool Koor!

Let’s get back to our alternative scene ! I’ve mentionned this already but the art center L’Iselp is inviting the public every month for a walk to visit some of those spaces that you may have heard about already if it’s not your first visit in this blog. This Saturday, the ”Let’s Walk” will bring you to Hekla, De La Charge and Rectangle : the three of them being very close to each other in Saint-Gilles.

I’ve took the time to go to visit the ”Portrait of a city” at Argos Art Center and I can only advice you to do the same before it ends this week-end.
But… I have failed, last week to talk to you about the opening of a new project space in Brussels, called apes&castle… But the exhibition is going on and I really will have to call them for an appointment to discover their initiative and the artists !
And if you are in Ixelles, you must have notice some knit graffiti here and there and it’s probably the creation of the Yarn bombing Ixelles collective who do have their exhibition now at Elzenhof.
PARTIES
If you want to dance, there’s a lot to do this week… I’ve seen something at the Fuse, some other things at The Wood… But sometimes you want something simple and maybe not spending the whole night out, because you have work or school the next morning. Then the Bar du Matin is a nice balance : there’s a DJ with nice music, a nice space to dance and here you are, back in your bed at 2 am the latest! This week, you can go and enjoy the festive collective ”Supafly” and their old skool sets.
The Black Buddha is a more altenative venue than Bar du Matin… Even if you just arrived in Brussels, you can tell by the small details : like the fact that they need to say that ”no dogs are allowed”…
This week there’s the party Intentional Resonane, for the 15 years of existence of SWFD. Listen to this sample and if you enjoy go and get lost near the Canal for an underground night!
I would have never bet on a drum and bass party in an Irish Pub and certainly not the one in the Center.. But then, here we are with the Drum Room Resident on a Wednesday night! Seems weird to me at first, but maybe this will be for me the opportunity to get inside that bar?
PERFORMANCES
And now, ladies and gentlemen… I’m talking about an event that I have no clue who’s behind it, never heard or went to the venue and can’t even tell you what is all about… An exhibition ? A performance, like I’m guessing ? That’s strange… ”étrange” as we say in French, and they have indeed a way to let us know how ”étrange” it is with their word play title ”Etre-Ange” (which means ”Be-Angel” if être is a verb, or ”Person-Angel” if être is the noun…). And that was how I was able to write about something I don’t know…
Back to things that I can relly on : The Theatre de la Balsamine is helding a festival called ”Nos petites Madeleines”… While it’s a french speaking theatre, their program offers much more than that, with performances or installations, for example. And for the closing party of this festival it’s a performance by Bonom, the most reknowed and loved street artist in Brussels who is exploring other areas of his talents…
CINEMA
For cinema, my first proposal is a French movie about some vandals painting on the street at night… But isn’t it ”Learning French to be be able to watch a movie” that I see on your to do list since months? Ok, I’m kidding and teasing you a bit…
It’s a holiday week in Belgium next week, so the perfect time for a Film festival dedicated to kids. The program is really rich, with movies from all around the World and it’s held in various venues in Brussels : Aventure, Natural Sciences Museum, Galeries Cinéma, GC Ten Winjgaert and the ones I’ve listed in the French version.
COMMUNITY
And to end the article for this week, it’s time to be community minded…
You may then want to visit one of the few free market that we have in town. I wrote free market, and not flea market. It’s like a flea market, indeed, because it offers mainly second hand stuff… but it’s all free. Means you don’t have to pay.
You also can build you own community and decide to live all together. That’s a bit what happens in the squat scene : some people look around to find a nice abandonned building and decide to occupy it. Usually they try to contact the owner to let her/him know about it and they even sign a contract for the occupation. The argument is that the owner is better having someone reliable in the venue, instead of letting it empty.. because nature doesn’t like emptiness, so you never know who else may squat the house and they may not be as nice…
Communa is one of the groups who are doing such things and they have a new house, after they had to let go of the big office building near Delta. They get together with the group from Le Phare who also had to leave the beautiful mansion in Ixelles, where we had some great fun and evenings of talks and food…
If you’re curious, go to the open days and meet the people, drink or eat a little thing (always vegetarian choices)…
Note also that you can actively participate to the beer offers of one of my favourite bar : Le Pantin. As a pils, they have the classic Jupiler, but they want to change this basic beer with a pils from another brewery. They need your help, so how can you refuse to give them a hand ? You’ll pay 2€ and you’ll get 6 samples of each in order to vote for your favourite one….
If you didn’t realise you were in Belgium, I guess now you have no doubts.
And because a Community is about give back what you receive, you may want to share your own tips about Brussels, join The Hive Community with a weekly agenda from several people… And we’re having a drink next Wednesday to meet each other! Join us, share, love and go out…
