Agenda 5/09/2013 – 11/09/2013
Openings, reopenings, new openings… That’s the word I’ve seen the most while checking what’s going on in the city this week. During the Summer, most of my agendas offers a lot of parties… the biggest reason being that exhibition, theater, litterature events were nearly absent of the calendar.
It seems that we do have our brain and interest for culture back now !
First of all, that’s the month of Design September.
There’s a lot of events going on during the month : exhibition, lectures, shop openings, studio’s open doors… If you love architecture, design, jewelry, fasion…. there’s for sure something for you. I can’t talk about everything, but as you might figured out, I love music… so one of the events during the Design September is Mad(e) in Brussels and they will propose a Mad Radio Show every Thursday and Friday.
The first week-end of September is also known for the kick-off of openings of art galleries. Brussels is full of them ! If you want to have an overview of what’s going on in the biggest ones, check the Brussels Art Days website.
Yet, you won’t have a clue about each and every exhibition to come, so here are few more proposals that I’m adding to the more than thirty ones :
On Thursday, there’s a photography exhibition of Corentin Walravens “Tokyoïtes” in a bar in Flagey called Flip.
Corentin took those pictures when he travelled to Tokyo and he offers us a nice set of street photography ! As I love street photography, I can’t miss that nice event, in a very small and friendly bar !
There’s also the opening of Anne-Flore Cabanis “Chronotopie” at Archiraar. For the occasion, you will discover her urban installation in the street where the gallery is situated.
Talking about urban installation, on Friday, there’s the opening exhibition of Gregory Decock at the Pannonica Gallery.
Gregory is known as being a street artist who did great urban installation…. but that’s not what this exhibition is about : he is showing here some colorful drawing….
On Saturday, the Hectoliter Galerij invites us to the opening of Free Motives. I don’t know the artists and the place. And that’s the reason why I talk about it : to discover them ! And also becauce it’s on Saturday and they are situated in Saturday Place, kind of easy to remember !
If you don’t care about culture, and have only one idea : doing some shopping. I have suggestions for you, too ! First of all, there’s the SiblingsFactory Opening Night. It’s a new concept store, opening this Thursday.
Another event, is the big « Braderie » (Sales) in the Cimetière d’Ixelles neighborhood. It means that all the shops will have a stand in the street with some sales, and the streets will be full of people going around, having a drink, tasting some street food… It’s during the whole week-end !
After those frivolity, let’s back to some deep serious things… For example tonight there’s a lecture by Margaret Atwood, a Canadian writer.
My friend Kim told me she’s wonderful, so I just trust her on that. If you go and don’t like it or if you feel this has nothing to do in this agenda, blame her.
If you go and love it and thing that it was brilliant to talk about it : give me all the credit ! Yeah, I know I’m so cool and grateful to my friends…
If you love cinema, you might be interested of this Avant-Première event of “Vijay and I” with the presence of the film crew !
What else do we have this week-end ?
There’s this wine shop in Flagey, the Marché aux vins, which is also a place to have a drink, but don’t think of it as a trendy Wine bar. It was open long time before the trend was high !
It’s more like a garage where they are selling wine and put some chairs and invites some musicians sometimes. And they exist since ten years now, so it’s party time, with Karaoke (I told you to not think about it as a trendy place), Tzigane concert…
There’s many other concerts : if you like jazz, you might want to go to Brass for the trio Hermia – Ceccaldi – Darrifourq.
Or there’s a band coming from French Britanny at La Poissonnerie… The place is kind of a squat in an old shop and they held many social and cultural events. Like every Thursdays a Table d’hôte ! After the Summer break, that’s the first of the season !
If it’s not the first time you’re reading me, you know how I love the obscure, underground events…. When I discovered the organizers who’s name is « Les concerts du néant absolu et de la mort » I knew I found one of those passionnate people who cares only about what they love. So this week the bands who are playing are Ecoute la Merde, Le Ton Mité and Musique Triste.
Only the names is a poetic programm by itself
Another alternative proposal is the concert of K’Hawah Jazz Band at a bar called la Gougoute à Pépé, in Ixelles…
On the agenda this week: there’s also a #InstaMeetBrussels. If I have to explain you what is it about, it means that you’re not familiar with the Instagram vocabulary! It’s a spontaneous event where few Instagramers from Brussels will have a drink together. That’s it! We’ve been following each other and liking and commenting for so long now that when @Sorino_ came up with the idea, I was thrilled! So we’ll meet on Sunday at Café des Halles Saint Gery at 15.00 (even though I’ll arrive later myself).
If you want to party a bit, this week you can go for the MikiGold and Fatoosan “Bday – Dress Up Party” DJ set at Café Maison du Peuple, on Friday. Expect some hip-hop from two DJ’s of the Supafly collective !
On Saturday, that’s the Strictly Niceness Season Opening.
To be totally honest with you, I’m not as enthusiast as I use to be as while they have change the day (it used to be on every second Saturday) to make it now every firs Saturday… they’re loosing a wonderful DJ resident, Bernard Dobelleer… and they’re also loosing some of their most loyal customers : the people coming from Liège.
The thing is that Liège has a similar party called « Superfly », every first Saturday of the month… with Bernard as DJ..
Till last year, he was able to mix in both parties and people from Liège were coming to both parties too !
So what will they choose to do now ? And they were giving a good groovy atmosphere ! So the things won’t be the same again.
In the other hand, the party might attract new crowd, that’s for sure ! And – I hope – for the best ! I can only wish good luck to the team! Making drastic changes is not an easy choice to make, and I trust DJ Kwak to have think about everything. After eleven years (which makes it the oldest party in town), it was about time to slightly change the concept : what worked ten years ago can’t work today, people love their habits but they also love to discover things or they get bored !
I believe you did not get bored while reading this, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this last sentence of this agenda !

Septembre à Bruxelles, c’est le mois des ouvertures, réouvertures, nouvelles ouvertures, portes ouvertes… et aussi le mois du Design ! Design September regroupe un tas d’événements qui devraient intéresser tous ceux qui aiment le design, l’architecture ou la mode !
Par le biais d’expositions, de conférences, de portes ouvertes d’atelier, et j’ai même trouvé de quoi nourrir les oreilles de ceux qui aiment la musique grâce à Mad(e) in Brussels et son Mad Radio Show tous les jeudis et vendredis, sur la place du nouveau Marché aux grains !
Début septembre, c’est également la grosse ouverture des galeries d’art. Tu peux découvrir un tas de vernissages des principales galeries d’art contemporain de la ville (une trentaine) durant le Brussels Art Days.
Et histoire de ne pas favoriser que les grands, je te propose également quelques autres expositions non reprises dans l’agenda du Brussels Art Day :
Jeudi soir, c’est une expo photo de Corentin Walravens “Tokyoïtes” au Flip, à Flagey.
Si tu es – comme moi – amateur de street photography, c’est exactement de ce dont il s’agit !
A la galerie Archiraar, c’est le vernissage de Anne-Flore Cabanis et son “Chronotopie”. L’expo se déroule au-delà des murs de la galerie, puisque que l’artiste a également créé une installation urbaine dans la rue de la Tulipe !
Vendredi soir, on se dirige vers le centre ville – autre pôle artistique de la ville – afin de découvrir les dessins de Gregory Decock à la Galerie Pannonica.
Ancien street artiste, le travail de Gregory devrait nous démontrer que dans « street art » il y a surtout le mot « Art » et que ceux qui le pratiquent sont des artistes à part entière !
Samedi, on va Place du Samedi ! Oui, je sais c’est facile… mais je soupçonne la Hectoliter Galerij de proposer son vernissage de l’exposition Free Motives ce jour-là pour ça !
Pour les plus shoppeurs et autres fashionistas d’entre mes lecteurs, il y a ce jeudi l’ouverture de SiblingsFactory, un concept store qui promet !
Et si tu aimes l’ambiance fête de village, je signale dans l’oreillette que le quartier du Cimetière d’Ixelles est fait durant tout le week-end avec sa grande Braderie annuelle !
Sinon, côté culture, il y a une conférence d’une – grande – auteure canadienne ce soir à Flagey. Il s’agit de Margaret Atwood et elle nous dit déjà quelques mots :
Côté cinéma, le lendemain au même endroit, c’est l’avant-première du film “Vijay and I”.
L’un des acteurs est connu pour avoir joué dans la série « Community » : le personnage grâce auquel la série est plus intéressante que ce qu’il n’y parait au premier abord, vu que c’est lui qui amène toutes les références cinématographiques ! Intéressant de voir que sa carrière continue avec des rôles au cinéma !
Si tu aimes le Parvis de Saint-Gilles, son ambiance, sa population, ses petits cafés et commerce, son marché quotidien, tu seras sans doute intéressé de découvrir la pièce de théâtre : Les Pavés du Parvis à La Maison du Peuple !
A part ça, avant que je n’oublie : dimanche, il y a un #InstaMeetBrussels. Si tu es sur Instagram, joins-toi à nous ! L’idée n’est pas de moi, mais de @sorino_ et je trouve assez sympa de se rencontrer autour d’un verre entre gens amoureux de Bruxelles, qui la documentent énormément chacun avec son regard, son style…. Cela se passe à 15h au Café des Halles Saint-Géry (j’y arriverai un peu plus tard, ayant d’autres obligations ailleurs juste avant).
Du côté des concerts, il y a pas mal à en dire :
D’abord au Marché aux vins, dans le quartier Flagey, qui fête ses dix ans. Ce qui explique pourquoi ce magasin de vins, n’est pas un trendy « Wine Bar », puisqu’il a ouvert longtemps avant que cela ne soit la mode ! Un lieu unique en son genre, avec un patron fan de musique tzigane, à découvrir !
Du côté de la scène jazz, le Brass convie à un concert gratuit du nouveau trio Hermia – Ceccaldi – Darrifourq.
On passe du côté alternatif de la scène bruxelloise à présent :
La Poissonnerie, ce magasin-squat à Schaerbeek, reprend ses tables d’hôte du jeudi et un groupe breton s’occupera de nous titiller les oreilles pendant que l’on mange !
J’en avais déjà parlé par le passé : « Les concerts du néant absolu et de la mort » reviennent au Student, ce café de l’avenue Rogier, et nous invitent à découvrir des artistes qui nous proposent une musique expérimentale, noisy ou douce. Toujours poétique. Comme par exemple Ecoute la Merde, Le Ton Mité ou encore Musique Triste.
Si tu n’as pas encore eu l’occasion de t’y rendre : la Gougoute à Pépé est un café à découvrir entre Flagey et l’ULB. Ils organisent souvent des évènements : concerts ou soirée jeux. Ils n’ont aucune présence en ligne et la meilleure façon de découvrir le programme est de passer lire le tableau, sur place. Si je peux te proposer un lien cette fois-ci, c’est parce qu’il a été créé par K’Hawah Jazz Band, le groupe qui y joue cette semaine !
Du côté des sorties pour danser, il y a MikiGold and Fatoosan pour une “Bday – Dress Up Party” au Café Maison du Peuple, vendredi.
Samedi c’est le grand retour de la Strictly Niceness nouvelle mouture, puisque nouveau DJ résident et nouvelle date (le premier samedi du mois au lieu de l’ancien second samedi du mois).
J’ai mis dans la version en anglais mes sentiments par rapports à ces changements, qui ont pour conséquence la perte de Bernard Dobelleer et du très fidèle public liégeois. Sachant que d’un autre côté, tout concept, pour continuer, doit pouvoir se renouveller…
Il est temps pour moi de te laisser et de commencer à profiter de ce week-end qui promet d’être chargé !
